If you're outfitting a commercial gym floor, you've probably seen the debate: leg press vs hack squat. Everyone focuses on which builds muscle better. But as the person signing the PO, I've got a different set of questions.
Like: Which machine will my members actually use without needing a spotter? Which one holds up after 15,000 reps a month? And—honestly—which one stops me from getting a call from my head trainer at 9 PM on a Saturday saying something broke?

The hack squat is a vertical (or angled) sled. You squat the weight from a fixed back pad. It's more technical, more demanding, and—in my experience—more intimidating for the average gym-goer.
For a commercial gym, the question isn't which one is "better" in a vacuum. It's which one better serves your specific member base and floor plan. Let me walk through the dimensions that actually matter in a buying decision.
Dimension 1: User Adoption & Ease of Entry
This is the one that surprised me. Everything I'd read about commercial gym equipment said the hack squat was a staple for serious lifters. In practice, the leg press had three times the daily usage in our facility.
Leg Press: Sit down. Push. Done. No balancing act. No scary moment of wondering if you'll get stuck at the bottom. The Cybex leg press, for example, has a very forgiving range of motion and a plate-loaded design that feels natural. New lifters hop on without asking for help. That matters when you don't have a trainer on every machine.
Hack Squat: You have to load plates while standing behind the machine, then step in, position your shoulders under pads, and squat. For anyone who's not a regular, that's several steps too many. From the outside, the hack squat looks more advanced. The reality is it intimidates 60% of the members who might otherwise use it.

Leg Press: It isolates the legs without engaging the core or back for stabilization. That's not a flaw—it's a feature. If you want to load the quads and glutes to failure without worrying about your lower back giving out, this is your machine. Rehab specialists love it for that reason.
Hack Squat: Because your torso is fixed at a 45-degree angle (or vertical, depending on the model), the load path is different from a free-weight squat. It's not really "more functional"—it's just different. It places more shear force on the knees and lower back. That can be great for advanced lifters who need that stimulus. It can be disastrous for someone with dodgy knees.
The conventional wisdom is that hack squats are better for athletic development. My experience across 200+ commercial equipment evaluations suggests the leg press is safer and more versatile for the broadest range of members. Period.
Dimension 3: Floor Space & Footprint Efficiency
This is where the hack squat surprised me again—this time, not in a good way.
Leg Press: Standard commercial leg presses, like the Cybex Leg Press (which is a plate-loaded model), take up roughly 75 x 55 inches of floor space. That's a lot. But because the user can load from both sides, traffic flow around the machine is manageable.
Hack Squat: The Cybex Hack Squat, by comparison, might look compact—but users need clearance to load plates from behind. In practice, that means you need 6-8 feet of clear space around the machine. I've seen gyms squeeze a hack squat into a corner, and it became a nightmare for loading and unloading. People assume a hack squat saves space. What they don't see is the invisible radius members need to actually use the thing.
My calculation: For a commercial gym, a leg press actually feels more space-efficient in real-world usage, even if the machine itself is larger. You can line up the plate tree nearby and have members flow around the front. The hack squat demands more usable square footage because of the loading geometry.
Dimension 4: Maintenance & Durability
In my first year of managing this stuff, I made the classic rookie maintenance error: assumed all 'commercial' rated equipment would hold up the same. Cost me a $1,200 repair on a cable-driven machine that I bought used.
Leg Press: Plate-loaded leg presses are mechanically simple. There's no cable system to fray. No pulley to replace. The seat slides on rails, and the footplate is a welded steel assembly. This is the dimension where the hack squat fights back.
Leg Press: Most commercial leg presses have a 1,000-1,500 lb weight stack capacity (or a plate-loaded version that accepts huge loads). Members love loading 6-8 plates per side. It makes them feel impressive. That's actually a feature: a machine that lets members feel strong is a machine they'll use.
Hack Squat: Load capacity is generally lower—around 500-800 lbs depending on the model. Why? Because the load path is different. On a hack squat, you're lifting your own body weight plus the plates at an angle. The machine has to be built to handle that combined force. Most commercial models top out around a 750-lb plate load. That's still huge—but it means your strongest members might hit the machine's limit, especially on a 45-degree angled hack squat.
Reality check: Most of your members aren't pushing 750 lbs. But the perception that the leg press "goes higher" is real. If your gym has a competitive crowd, they'll gravitate to the leg press just to stack plates.
Which One Should You Buy?
Here's my practical advice, based on 4+ years of watching members use both machines across three facilities.
Get the Leg Press if:
- Your gym serves a general population (corporate, community, mid-tier commercial)
- You have limited maintenance staff
- You want a machine that 85% of your members can use independently
- You're looking for a higher utilization rate per square foot
Get the Hack Squat if:
- Your gym targets or is used heavily by intermediate and advanced lifters
- You have dedicated trainers who can coach proper setup
- You have room for the loading clearance
- You already own a leg press and want to add variety
What I tell colleagues who ask: For a standard commercial gym floor, start with the leg press. It's the workhorse. Add a hack squat later if your membership base demands it. I've seen too many hack squats turned into expensive plate storage racks. Don't let yours be one of them.
And yes—periodically verify those machine specs with your supplier. The Cybex models I'm referencing are based on their current product line as of early 2025, but weight ratings and dimensions can change between generations. Ask for the spec sheet.
